Aurel was the last keeper of the Lantern Deep when the First Empire went dark. The records disagree on whether Aurel is a person, a ship, or a promise kept by both.
Survey crews who reach the Deep report a single vessel holding station among the blue stars, running lights steady, hailing no one. It answers only in the old imperial cant, and only to ask one question: "Is it time?"
No one has yet found the right answer. Several have found the wrong one.
